Water police
The Water Police (WSP) ensures safety on the country's approx. 900 kilometers of navigable waterways with approx. 260,000 ship movements per year. The WSP monitors shipping and keeps our waters clean and has been particularly committed to environmental protection for decades.
The first specialist commission for environmental protection in Germany was set up in 1974. In 2002, responsibility was extended to include the nature conservation areas in the authority's police district. In 2007, responsibility for environmental crimes was extended to the entire urban area within the Duisburg police headquarters.
